1996 - East 17

03.05.1996 Festhalle Frankfurt: EAST 17
support: Construction, Two Good

7.30 p.m. the lights went out and seven young men enter the stage accompanied by Gregorian monk music. There they are standing in front of the huge black curtain which covers the EAST 17 stage.

For the next 30 minutes they dance 100% synchronised and sing along to playback recordings. Their name is: Construction, they are from Germany and they were actually quite good.

Their dance floor songs were groovy enough to get one going.

Shortly after 8 p.m. two dancers / singers are now on stage dancing to pop music of a strange kind. They call themselves TWO GOOD although I doubt it. Their 15 minutes set was received with mixed feelings and the audience wasn’t sure what to make of them.

Finally and only minutes after Two Good had left the curtain falls, revealing the huge and exciting looking stage of East 17.

The show starts with the sound of wings and on screen an owl flies from left to right while two huge owl sculptures with red glowing eyes make their way to the front of the stage.

The mood is mystic and on screen you can see the boys from East 17 running through a forest at night followed by huge light spots. Towards the end of the short clip they reach the outskirts of the forest and end up on stage were they were greeted by high pitched screams of their mainly female fans.

“Steam” kicks off their “Up all night” tour.

The sound is not good at all and improves a bit throughout the evening. East 17 did not come alone. They are accompanied by a 9 piece band: Drums, Percussion, 2x Keyboards, Guitar and 4x Backing vocals. Apart from that 4 really hot looking female dancers are mingling with the boys on stage every now and then.

East 17 are really good and in only 90 minutes they play all their hits turning the venue into a discotheque or a pool of candle lights.
