08.03.2019 The Station, Cannock: Sulpher, support acts: The Dead XIII & Mans Ruin
A
night of industrial rock/metal with three bands all for less than a tenner – what more
could one ask for?
‘Mans
Ruin’ played cover versions that included Limp Bizkit, The Cranberries, Rage
against the machine and even a very quirky version of Stevie Wonder’s
‘Superstitious’ and they were great fun to watch and to listen to. They weren’t
taking themselves too seriously and they were down to earth performers and the
perfect opening act.
Manchester band ‘The Dead XIII’ was next on the bill and optically they reminded me of Rammstein and their industrial metal was a little bit Rammstein-esque at times yet their own style and their sound had a darker side to it that fitted in well with the industrial metal theme of the night.
The
sound was a bit dodgy all evening especially when it comes to the vocals and at
times it was hard to hear them.
It
wasn’t a great turn out and the band asked the audience to come closer to the
stage. In fact, Rob Halliday from Sulpher tongue in cheek said: ‘Thank you all
for coming, all 46 of you’ but even with a less packed venue the bands gave
their all.
Sulpher
who consists of ex-members of prolific bands The Prodigy, The Jesus & Mary
Chain as well as Marilyn Manson came on stage at 11 pm and I could only stay an
hour.
Sulpher
sounded awesome live and better-known tracks like ‘One of us; or ‘we will never
know’ were very well received by the crowd.
With
ex-Prodigy’s front man Keith Flint’s suicide just a few days ago and still very
much in the news I was wondering if any mention or maybe a tribute to him
musically would be made by Sulpher but because I couldn’t stay until the end I
don’t know whether or not that was part of their setlist or intention while
performing at the Station, which is my favourite rock club as people there are
really lovely and unpretentious.
All
in all it was a superb night.
